The importance of forgetting to remember
Do you know where the expression “An Elephant Never Forgets” comes from? The story might surprise you.
Early elephant circus trainers discovered that they could confine elephants with a simple trick. When the elephants were young, trainers would chain a single elephant foot to a strong stake in the ground. These young and still relatively weak elephants would learn that they could not pull up the stake from the firm ground, and they also could not walk further than the heavy chain would allow them. They were trapped.
Eventually, these young elephants would grow bigger and stronger, but this early training would remain with them to the point that a simple thin rope, tethered to a foot, would prevent the now full-grown elephants from breaking free and escaping. Although these strong elephants could easily snap the rope or pull the stake out of the ground, the memories ingrained in them when they were young prevented them from achieving their own freedom.
Much like elephants, we too can become tethered to childhood trauma that keeps us trapped in a mental prison. There is nothing stopping us from breaking these psychological chains that bind us, but our own memories. We have to un-train our minds, forget to remember that we feel bound, which is no easy task, no matter how big and strong we may seem on the outside.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be used to help break these mental shackles that bind us from taking the first few steps toward positive mental health. These baby “elephant” steps, small steps that may appear big, help us identify and remove psychological barriers. Eventually, Schema Therapy can be incorporated to create life patterns of positive behaviors and healthy routines.
Elizabeth Lacy has been working for more than 16 years to help improved individuals lives through better mental health using the psychological assessment and treatment of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Schema Therapy. If you are ready to learn how you too can break free from childhood trauma to overcome your anxiety or addictions and learn to manage personality disorders, please contact Liz to schedule an introductory consultation.
Therapy isn’t shameful. It’s courageous and inspiring!
A lot has been written about what it means to be courageous. In Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage, written in 1895, a cowardly Civil War Union soldier get the opportunity to redeem himself on the battlefield by showing military courage. The 1956 book Profiles in Courage, written by then Senator John F. Kennedy, won the Pulitzer Prize for describing acts of political courage and integrity by eight United States Senators. The Lord of the Rings films, directed by Peter Jackson, introduced a new generation to the classical fantasy literature of J.R.R. Tolkien’s courageous hobbits from the Shire on their journey to destroy the One Ring. These are grand acts of bravery and courage from heroes; inspiring people to achieve more than they thought they were capable of achieving.
Every day, I get to see similar acts of courage which inspire me. When I get a phone call from a client or couple wanting to set up their first therapy appointment, I feel inspired. These individuals did maybe one of the most terrifying things in their life and put their ego to the side to ask for help. That takes courage.
This courage continues when they walk through my office door for the first time, when they open up and share their thoughts and feelings, and when they learn new skills to face their personal demons. Defeating your psychological demons takes no less courage than a fictional Hobbit swinging the mythical blade Sting at the spider-demon Shelob. Both can be inspiring.
If you feel inspired to seek help, do not delay. Take that first courageous step and contact us to begin improving your psychological health, addressing your emotional needs, and improving your overall mental wellbeing. You never know what changes you might inspire through your own brave actions.
It’s not easy growing up in today’s world…
Adolescents are are still mentally growing; finding their personal style, developing their opinions, and defining themselves. There is so much stimulus surrounding us at all times; photoshopped influencers and polarizing media providing a non-stop barrage of information telling us how to look and how to feel.
Therapy can provide a moment for serenity, where an adolescent can be guided, without judgement, to see themselves through new eyes.
Parents should understand that Teens and Adolescents that request or require therapy is in no way a reflection of their parenting. When it comes to modern mental health, there are so many factors that are beyond a parents control. Adolescents are a product of the influence of modern social media, schooling system, peer-pressure, home life, and the overall state of the world around them.
Seeking help and guidance in uncertain times, can bring heath and happiness to the adolescent, their friends and social circles, and their home environment. Adolescents can learn tools and skills to improve their mental well-being and strengthen healthy relationships.
Email Campaigns
A few old email campaigns I created for clients. Unfortunately the formatting and styling got lost in the conversion to PDF, but the writing is still there.
UnderTheTop.com
It’s a common misconception between women that bras are always uncomfortable, no matter what size you wear.
Here at UnderTheTop.com we are on a mission to dispel that belief. Your bra should be comfortable and if it isn’t then you’re most likely wearing the wrong size. I have spent the last few weeks doing bra fitting parties. So many ladies have said to me, as
they get older it is more difficult to find comfortable supportive bras, weather it is due to natural change in shape or breast surgery.
Finding the Help You Need
Many ladies have confessed to me they are embarrassed about going into a lingerie shop, feeling fat and ugly, and as they get older they have great difficulty finding comfortable supportive bras.
Even large department stores like Marks and Spencers, while trying to market to a younger audience, seem to be forgetting the needs of their older customers.
Enter the “Bring Back My Cleavage” Party
So instead of Ann Summers parties, we have “Bring Back My Cleavage” parties. During these parties, we bring some of UnderTheTop.com’s most popular bras from our Anita range. Anita have been designing and manufacturing underwear for over 100 years. We need to find a bra for the ladies that lifts and brings your boobs together, where they used to be before babies and life in general took it’s toll. Giving your guests a chance to lose some inhibitions, have a good laugh, all while finding the right bra to make your body look great and life more comfortable. Several ladies get together and we have a laugh and relax, and end up showing your friends our new cleavage.
